(Staff Reports)- YUCAIPA: A group of Von’s employees gathered together to help pay for an elderly woman’s groceries after her purse was stolen.
On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at approximately 4:01 p.m., deputies from the Yucaipa Police Department responded to the report of a theft of a purse in the Vons Supermarket located in the 34000 block of Yucaipa Boulevard.
Upon arrival, deputies were advised that the victim, an elderly female, was shopping and had placed her purse in the child’s seating area of the cart. The victim bent down to retrieve an item from a lower shelf taking her attention away from the cart for only seconds.
A male subject was captured on surveillance video removing her purse from the cart and exiting the store. Grocery money along with personal items were inside the purse, which left the victim very distraught. Several employees from Vons gathered their personal money together to help pay for her items.
At approximately 10:00 p.m. that evening, an employee of a local gas station found the victim’s purse inside a trash can near the gas pumps and turned it into department personnel at the police department.
Through investigation, Sheriff’s Service Specialist J. Smith was able to identify the suspect as 18-year-old David Yniguez, a resident of Yucaipa and turned the case over to station detectives.
On Tuesday, July 19th at approximately 9:00 a.m., detectives served a search warrant at David Yniguez’ residence where evidence was located connecting him to the crime. Yniguez was arrested and booked at Central Detention Center for grand theft and elder abuse.
