Apple Valley, Calif.- On Nov. 4, the Apple Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees appointed Ronald James Powell, Ph.D. as a provisional board member effective immediately. Dr. Powell is a retired educator, with 41 years of experience in public education. He will take the place of Mrs. Lisa Lawrence, who resigned effective Sept. 30 due to moving out of Apple Valley.
This provisional appointment shall become an effective appointment unless a petition calling for special election, containing a sufficient number of signatures, is filed in the office of the county superintendent of schools within 30 days of the date of the provisional appointment. The newly appointed board member will hold office until the next regularly scheduled election for district Board members in 2018 and shall be afforded all the powers and duties of a Board member upon appointment.
Last month, the Board of Trustees announced that, in lieu of holding a special election, it would make an appointment to fill a vacant position on the Board (E.D. 5092). Dr. Powell was selected out of nine qualified candidates, who each completed an application packet and interviewed at a special board meeting on Friday, Nov. 4.
