RANCHO CUCAMONGA – Authorities recovered thirty stolen guitars following a search warrant in Rancho Cucamonga.
On February 19, 2017, at approximately 4:30 pm, deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department’s Victoria Gardens Retail Theft Team, responded to a commercial burglary report at the Guitar Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
Guitar Center store employees recognized Jason Poe, 38, and John Mahalak as suspects involved in thefts of Gibson Les Paul guitars at the Riverside Guitar Center. Before deputies arrived on the scene, store employees saw Mahalak steal a sound speaker and enter a vehicle with Poe. Employees were able to obtain the license plate and relay the plate information to arriving deputies.
Deputy Berumen conducted the investigation and obtained evidence linking both Poe and Mahalak to the theft of the speaker. Berumen obtained Mahalak’s residential address and authored a search warrant for his residence.
On February 19, 2017, at approximately 9:00 pm, deputies served the search warrant at Mahalak’s residence located at 12479 east Foothill Blvd, in Rancho Cucamonga.
Both Mahalak and Poe were arrested inside the residence.
During the subsequent search, deputies located over 30 guitars that included ukuleles, banjos, mandolins, Gibson Les Paul electric and acoustic guitars. Mahalak and Poe denied ownership of the guitars found. Deputies believe the recovered guitars were stolen and are currently attempting the identify the victims associated with the guitars.
Mahalak and Poe were booked into the West Valley Detention Center for possession of stolen property. Mahalak and Poe’s bail was set at $25,000.
